A family vision board: dream together

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A family vision board puts everyone's wishes side by side as pictures.
  • Making it together means everyone is heard and plans are easier to agree on.
  • Everyone picks three pictures, then you choose the wishes that come back most.
  • Turn one or two into plans with when, a first step and who.

Everyone in the house has wishes. A dog. A big trip. A treehouse. More Sunday mornings without plans. But they're never in one place, and they rarely get talked about.

"What do we actually want this year?"

A family vision board puts those wishes side by side, and turns some of them into real plans.

What is a family vision board?

A board with pictures of what you want as a family: places, moments, things to do, how you want home to feel. Everyone adds something.

It's not a to-do list. It's a picture of a good year.

Why make one together?

  • Everyone gets heard, including the youngest
  • You see what you share, and what's different
  • Plans get easier when everyone already agreed on the dream
  • It's fun. It's one of the few planning sessions kids actually enjoy.

How do we make one?

1. Pick an evening. Snacks help. Phones away, except for finding pictures.

2. Everyone chooses three pictures. Something to do, somewhere to go, and how home should feel.

3. Put them side by side. Talk about each one. Why this?

4. Find the overlap. Which wishes come back more than once? That's where to start.

5. Pick one or two to make real this year.

How do we turn a picture into a plan?

Under each chosen picture, add three lines:

  • When: "summer holidays"
  • First step: "look at campsites in March"
  • Who: "Mum and Lena"

More on going from a dream to a first step: why your vision board isn't working.

Where should the vision board live?

Somewhere everyone sees it. A wall works at home. A shared board on your phones works everywhere, also when you're planning the trip at work.

How often do we look at it?

  • Once a month, five minutes at dinner: any progress?
  • At the end of the year: look back together. What came true?
