KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • A vision board on your phone gets seen every day; one on a wall fades into the background.
  • One dream per card: one photo and one line in the present tense.
  • Picturing the road, not only the finish, led to more effort and better results (Pham and Taylor).
  • Turn your biggest dream into one goal card, and tick off each morning you looked.

Every December, the internet fills up with vision boards. Magazine cut-outs, glue sticks, a big piece of cork. They look great for a week.

Then they end up behind a door.

This guide makes one you'll actually see: on your phone, in about 15 minutes, ready for 2027.

A vision board only works if you look at it. So put it where you already look.

Why make your vision board on your phone?

Because you pick up your phone dozens of times a day. A board on a wall gets seen when you walk past it, until you stop noticing it.

On your phone you can also change it in seconds, use your own photos, and put the steps right next to the dream. More on this in why your vision board isn't working.

What do I need?

  • Your phone
  • 15 minutes
  • A few photos: your own, or screenshots for now

That's it. No scissors.

Step 1: Which parts of life should I pick?

Pick four to six areas that matter to you next year. Not all of them. The ones you want more of.

  • Home: where and how you want to live
  • Health: how you want to feel
  • Money: what freedom looks like for you
  • Travel: where you want to go
  • Family and friends: who you want more time with
  • Work: what you want to build

Step 2: How do I fill a vision card?

One dream per card. One photo. One line, written as if it's already true.

The line should be something you can picture.

  • Vague: Travel more.
  • Clear: Through Italy by camper, slowly.

Your own photos work best. A real photo of your parents' garden says more than a perfect picture from the internet.

Should I picture the finish or the road?

Both. But the road matters more than most people think.

In a classic study, psychologists Lien Pham and Shelley Taylor asked students to picture themselves before an exam. One group pictured getting a top grade. Another pictured studying for it: where they'd sit, what they'd read. The students who pictured the studying studied more and got better grades.

So next to your dream photo, put the road too. That's step 3.

Step 3: Which dream becomes a goal this year?

Pick the one dream that matters most for 2027. Give it a goal card:

  • My goal: what, and by when
  • Now: where you are today
  • Why: the reason for tired days
  • Milestones: three or four big steps
  • What's in the way, and your plan for it

Step 4: How do I keep looking at it?

Add a habit card: Look at my vision board. Tick a day each morning you looked. Ten seconds with your coffee is enough.

It sounds too simple. That's exactly why it works: there's nothing to skip.

When should I start?

You don't have to wait for January 1st.

Researchers Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis found that people are more likely to start on goals after a "fresh start": a new year, but also a new month, a new week or a birthday. Make your board in December, and you start January with a plan you can already see.

When should I change it?

Once a month. Scroll through and ask: Is this still what I want?

Change what no longer fits. A vision board is a mirror, not a contract.

What does the complete board look like?

A handful of dreams with a photo and a line, one goal card with the steps, a reminder post-it and the habit tracker. All on one screen.

Questions

How do I make a vision board on my phone?

Pick four to six parts of life, add one photo and one line per dream, turn your biggest dream into a goal card with steps, and add a habit to look at it every morning.

How many pictures should a vision board have?

Fewer than you think. Around five dreams, one photo each, so every picture still stands out.

How should I write the lines on a vision board?

Short, specific and in the present tense, as if it is already true. 'Through Italy by camper, slowly' works better than 'travel more'.

Does visualising my goal help?

Picturing the process helps more than picturing only the result. In a study by Pham and Taylor, students who pictured studying studied more and got better grades.

When should I make my vision board?

Any fresh start works: a new year, a new month or a new week. December is a good moment to start January with a plan.
